Have you ever dreamed of being a pilot? Not sure what it takes. We will provide you a brief glimpse of the process here, including cost and time requirements.
Huntsville Aviation maintains an experienced staff of flight instructors whose sole goal is to provide you the confidence and safety while carrying to a level no other school can offer.
Our instructors will be right by your side from the first tour of the building up to your first solo flight, and even then are always available when needed.
Where to begin ...
The first step in your pilot career is to come to the airport and allow us to give you a brief tour of the facility including the fleet , maintenance bays , and pilot areas.
We will show you and discuss the 2 planes you may choose from, as well as acquaint you will the instructors and staff of Huntsville Aviation. If you have never been in any small, single-engine plane, let us know. We can
provide an "explorer flight". These flights are generally 30 minutes, cost $47, and are flown over Huntsville. Not only is seeing Huntsville from 1000 ft. a new experience, your first Cessna flight will be a memorable one.
The Process ...
The FAA requires a minimum of 40-hours of flight time to receive a private pilots licence. This is broken down into a minimum of 20-hours of flight with an instructor and 20-hours solo.
After completing the flight training, a medical certificate and the FAA written test is required. The final step is a "Examiner Checkride". Sound simple? The process is relatively painless
and one of the most fun, uplifting classes you will ever be in. Before you fly, we will show you all the basic of the plane from how the wing works, to how to check the oil and fuel levels.
Our flight staff will not release you to fly solo until they are confident in your piloting abilities. On the same note, you are not expected to fly solo until you are completely confident in
yourself and your training.
Once this initial training is complete, you will receive your "VFR Private Pilot" licence. This allows you to solo pilot the aircraft type you were trained in during any "visual flight rules" situation.
the VFR flight rules are essentially based on using your eyes and not the instruments to fly. This means you will be unable to fly in bad weather with limited visibility, or at altitudes where the
ground is obscured by cloud cover. This is a very comfortable level for many of our students, however there are those who desire more. The next level of training is to receive your "instruments" rating.
This allows you to pilot the aircraft using nothing but the instruments to guide you. This allows you to fly in increment weather as well as at higher altitudes. From here you may choose to receive your
"advanced aircraft", or "commercial pilot", or "multi-engine" ratings. Our staff can assist you in this process as well as explaining the advantages and disadvantages of each level.
What does this cost ...
The cost of your training may vary depending on the type of plane you learn in and the number of hours needed over the 40-hour minimum requirements.
Below is a chart of costs per plane showing the minimum and the average. Most student elect to train in the Cessna 152 due to the cost savings, however the
choice is ultimately yours. Keep in mind, that once you are cleared to pilot the Cessna 152, you can receive the Cessna 172 rating with a simple one-hour
examiner check ride. Our staff can explain further the differences in the aircraft and advantages and disadvantages of each. You may also view the fleet page
for detailed info about our airplanes.
